WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Future State: Teen Titans #1 by Tim Sheridan, Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona, Alejandro Sanchez, and Rob Leigh, on sale now.

What the future holds is never quite certain, especially not after the events of Scott Synder and Greg Capullo's Dark Nights Death MetalNow that the multiverse has been saved from total annihilation, a world of new possibilities has emerged, although nothing has yet been set in stone regarding which of these potential new futures will become reality. However, just because nothing has been made reality yet doesn't mean there isn't room to speculate on what may come to pass, and Future State: Teen Titans has given readers a glimpse at a dark course of events that could ultimately unfold for the team. Still, even in the darkest of timelines, there is always something that shines through, and the worst future for the Teen Titans may have just given some hope for the next DC power couple.

Future State: Teen Titans picks up a number of years after the tragic events that ended the Teen Titans Academy and demolished their home. Nightwing and Red Arrow have made the trek through treacherous territory from the Titans' safehouse under the streets of Queens to the wreckage and rubble of what used to be their tower on Titans Island. They've come to sift through the mounds of broken steel and concrete, hoping that they'll find something they can use to avenge the loss of their once shining monument to the next generation of do-gooders. Among the remains of Titans Tower, under the glow of the setting sun, is a small cemetery dedicated to those that they have lost, and Red Arrow lays down her bow at the grave of the speedster she loved.

Red Arrow sobs near graves of dead Titans in DC Comics

Future State has given the Teen Titans a world of hurt to contend with, but they aren't alone in their suffering. Wally West has felt a dark presence grow closer to him than ever before, becoming completely possessed by the Horseman of Apokolips known as Famine. With no control over his own body, Wally has painfully watched his own hands drain the life from some of his closest allies, including Wallace West aka Kid Flash.

When Red Arrow drops to her knees at his tombstone, a tattoo of the Flash emblem on her arm becomes visible, and though Nightwing has grown cold and stoic over the traumas the team has recently suffered, he still makes sure to give her at least some amount of space to grieve her loss.

It wasn't that long ago that Teen Titans #47 by Robbie Thompson and Javi Fernandez finally brought Red Arrow and Kid Flash together in a romantic fashion, something that had been building tension for a long time as the two teammates flirted back and forth. They've both overcome their own demons, as well as being made pawns of Joystick and facing off against their own, but the trials and tribulations that come with being a teenage superhero only served to bring the two closer together.

Their romantic relationship might be relatively new, but it seems as though it lasts at least as long as the academy does, ensuring that the two do stay together for several years at the least. With so many iconic couples in the DC universe, it's more than possible that Kid Flash and Red Arrow are being setup to follow in the footsteps of the great romances that have come before them. With any luck, things won't actually have to end with one of them being buried under the shadow of their former home.
