We have officially entered the final month in the countdown to the release of the DC original graphic novel Teen Titans: Beast Boy, the sequel to writer Kami Garcia and artist Gabriel Picolo's acclaimed 2019 OGN Teen Titans: Raven. To mark the occasion, Garcia has shared a sneak peek at the book -- which follows our protagonist, Garfield Logan, as he eats the notoriously-hot Carolina Reaper chili pepper for an audience of his peers.

Garcia's preview comes from Teen Titans: Beast Boy's seventh chapter, titled "Fight or Flight." Garfield is seen at the restaurant Kick-Ass BBQ, taking the necessary precautions before digging into the pepper. After taking a bite, Gar seems to feel the effects at first, before his super-heroic DNA appears to bail him out. The would-be Teen Titan shows no visible signs of being in pain and even goes in for a second bite, much to the chagrin of his detractors.

Similar to Teen Titans: Raven, the YA OGN is a reimagining of the origin story of Garfield Logan/Beast Boy, following the 17-year-old high school student as he takes part in dangerous dares in an attempt to get in with the popular kids and win over his crush. However, Gar gets more than he bargained for when his famous shape-shifting abilities begin to manifest. Per the book's full synopsis,

Garfield Logan has spent his entire life being overlooked. Even in a small town like Eden, Georgia, the

17-year-old with green streaks in his hair can’t find a way to stand out. And Gar is determined to find a

way to impress the social elite at Bull Creek High School. Gar’s besties, Stella and Tank, can’t

understand why he cares what other people think, and they miss their funny, pizza-loving, video game-

obsessed friend. When Gar accepts a wild dare, he impresses the popular kids, and his social status

soars. But other things are changing, too. Gar grows six inches overnight, his voice suddenly drops, and

he’s stronger and faster. He’s finally getting everything he wanted, but his newfound popularity comes

at a price. Gar takes on bigger and bigger dares and the stakes keep getting higher. When Gar realizes

the extent of his mysterious physical changes, he has to face the truth about himself—and the people

who truly matter—before his life goes roaring out of control.

Written by Kami Garcia and illustrated by Gabriel Picolo, Teen Titans: Beast Boy goes on sale Sept. 1 from DC Comics and is currently available for pre-order.
