Biopics have been a staple of the movie industry, with films like The Doors setting the standard for others to follow. Last year's Bohemian Rhapsody showcased the talents of Freddie Mercury through Rami Malek, and now the full trailer for 2019's Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton as famed English musician Elton John, has dropped.
Egerton is probably best known for his work on the Kingsman film franchise, and for playing the titular hero in 2018's Robin Hood, but the actor has been kicking around the industry for seven years, with numerous roles requiring his singing talents.
Interestingly, Egerton starred in the second Kingsman film alongside Elton John. Egerton also worked previously with director Dexter Fletcher on Eddie the Eagle, about English Olympic skier Michael Edwards.
Fletcher was an executive producer on Bohemian Rhapsody, so it's fair to say he knows something about creating successful musical biopic films. Elton John has enjoyed a long and respected career in the music industry thanks in part to his flamboyant act, costumes and lifestyle, as well as his masterful talent as a musician.
The synopsis for the film reads:
"Rocketman is an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years. The film follows the fantastical journey of transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John. This inspirational story -- set to Elton John’s most beloved songs and performed by star Taron Egerton -- tells the universally relatable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture. Rocketman also stars Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother."
Arriving May 31, director Dexter Fletcher's Rocketman stars Taron Egerton as Elton John, Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as John Reid, Gemma Jones as Ivy and Bryce Dallas Howard as Sheila Eileen.
