When it comes to iconography in Star Wars, few can reach the status without having a look that stands out from all the other characters in the franchise. But one character that stands out above all others just on his style alone is the bounty hunter Boba Fett. For decades, his origin was shrouded in mystery until Attack of the Clones revealed that he's a clone of Jango Fett, progenitor of the Clone Army. But even now, his story continues to change as The Mandalorian reveals even more history regarding Boba's green armor.

In Legends and canon, Boba's armor has never had an ounce of beskar steel -- at least until recently. Beskar is a precious metal that makes up the Mandalorian's armor. What makes it so valuable is its durability, as it can deflect blaster bolts and lightsaber strikes. For Din Djarin, the armor has a reflective silver finish, but for Boba, his father's armor was made of energized durasteel. Thanks to its properties, the metal is one of the most durable and available in the galaxy and is even used for ship hulls. That being said, Legends explains that Jango's armor is made entirely from durasteel.

Up until the episode "The Tragedy" of The Mandalorian, it was believed that Boba's armor was comprised of beskar. However, when the two Mandalorians cross paths, Din gets defensive over the armor, stating, "The beskar belongs to the Mandalorians. It was looted from us during the Purge." Boba responds that "the armor was my father's." That brief statement appears to alter decades of history with the character, but deeper inspection into the dialogue and history shows that word doesn't always travel fast in the galaxy. On the surface, the canon book Ultimate Star Wars: New Edition states that Boba's armor comprises heavily modified durasteel, making Din's comment even more suspect. That being said, the description of Jango's armor offers even more context that could either confuse or clarify fan questions. According to the book, Jango's armor is" energized armor designed with a durasteel alloy."And while this may seem like a clear-cut retcon, the fact that it's an alloy and modified helps to clear things up.

Considering Boba's history is still being explored, it's possible his time as a bounty hunter saw him adapt in phases. As a result, his armor, which was once energized durasteel, was later modified to include trace amounts of beskar. But Din believing the entire armor was beskar could imply that he wouldn't assume the armor isn't, to begin with, due to its importance. However, he never knew that it was the armor of Jango Fett, proving that his comment may not hold much water into what the armor is made of.

Another factor that leads to more confusion surrounding Fett's helmet is the dent on the top. If the suit were always beskar, that dent wouldn't have been possible. But, if he added beskar in the years since, it would explain why some areas like his chest and shoulder have dents while others do not. That being said, there is still much to learn about the true nature of Boba's armor. On the one hand, it could have beskar steel and Din Djarin's assumption is correct. But, on the other, he could be completely wrong in assuming his armor is beskar and it's merely an enhanced version of durasteel, just like in Legends.

Boba Fett's journey is still being told, and the history of his equipment carries just as much weight as the wearer. Therefore, audiences may learn more about his past when Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett is released. But until then, there could be potential retcons on the horizon to the character's history that places equal but different levels of importance on Boba's weapons, armor and character. Either war, it's clear that thanks to the beskar that may reside in his armor, Boba is more of a Mandalorian than he ever was before.

To see if more about Boba's armor is revealed, The Book of Boba Fett begins streaming Dec. 29 on Disney+.
