It's never a surprise when a series features a spunky animal sidekick to bring some laughs into the heroes' lives. Unfortunately, these spunky animal sidekicks can supply fewer laughs and more irritation than anything. Animal companions have become a big part of many Anime series.

They're the cute comic relief characters that break away the tension of the main plot. Though this may be their purpose, many fans say these characters are useless pests that can ruin a series. With so many examples of annoying animal companions, it leaves no reason to wonder why they've become such a hated part of Anime.

10 Hippo Is More Of A Nag Than A Guide For Lucia (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch)

Hippo Mascot Form Mermaid Melody Anime

In this series, Hippo takes on the role of animal guide for Lucia. Despite being a guide, he often has little use and doesn't contribute much to the group. He may be cute, but he tends to spend most of his time nagging Lucia over her decisions and her feelings for the human, Kaito. His concern over their relationship is well-intentioned but hypocritical since Hippo eventually falls for Yuri, a member of the enemy group called the Dark Lovers.

Hippo does improve over time as a character, especially after he gains a human boy form. As the story progresses, he develops out of his annoying mascot role.

9 Puar Is Mostly There To Be Cute And Useless (Dragon Ball)

Puar Dragon Ball Afraid

Puar is a shape-shifting cat and best friend and companion to Yamcha. His abilities have aided the heroes in the series at times. However, as the series progresses, he becomes of much less use. Like many other animal companions in Anime, he has a high-pitched and irritating voice that makes each of his appearances harder to enjoy.

He slowly becomes deadweight, mostly latching onto Yamcha all the time. He is mostly there to be nothing but a cute and funny companion with little to no impact on the story. If removed from the series, his absence would make no difference.

8 Ryo-Ohki Is An Irritating Companion To Pretty Sammy (Magical Project S)

Ryo-Ohki Sasami Magical Project S Spin Off

The series Magical Project S parodies many tropes within the magical girl genre, including the role of a cute animal guide to aid the lead. While Ryo-Ohki is cute, he is far more annoying than helpful. This series is the only one in the Tenchi franchise to feature Ryo-Ohki with the ability to speak.

His voice is grating and childlike, likely in an attempt to make him seem cuter that ultimately has the opposite effect. He is much nicer than most animal companions in Anime and shows great support for Sasami. His loyalty can be too much at times, turning into a strange puppy love crush. Overall, Ryo-Ohki from Magical Project S is the worst rendition of the companion in the entire franchise.

7 Happy's Annoying Personality And Cheesy One-liners Never Seem To Change (Fairy Tail)

Happy With Fish Fairy Tail

Thought meant to be the endearing mascot character of Fairy Tail, Happy is much more of a pain. He is always joking and cracking unfunny one-liners, which in itself isn't bad. But considering his humor is often inserted into more serious moments in the series, it becomes exhausting very quickly. He constantly harasses Lucy, making unsolicited comments on her weight. Though she may retort back with teasing of her own, the jokes are never funny from Happy and make him out to be very rude.

The biggest annoyance that comes with Happy is that his behavior goes unpunished. He constantly gets away with being obnoxious for the sake of comic relief.

6 Murugu's Taunts Make Her An Unlikable Pet (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Murugu Yu Yu Hakusho Anime Headshot

Murugu is the assistant and loyal pet of Suzaku, the arch-enemy of Yusuke Urameshi in Yu Yu Hakusho. He is very fond of her and protects her from harm. However, he is likely the only one who has a fondness for her as to everyone else, she is nothing but a nuisance. She follows only Suzaku's orders, acting as a spy for Maze Castle.

Suzaku uses her to gain information on his enemies to use to his advantage. When Suzaku is battling, Murugu gleefully watches from the side. She taunts her master's enemies, telling them all they are going to die. Despite her loyalty, Murugu is a useless sidekick who is more annoying than helpful.

5 Hawk Has A Cowardly And Arrogant Personality (Seven Deadly Sins)

Hawk Eating Scraps In The Seven Deadly Sins

Hawk is a talking pig character in the series Seven Deadly Sins. He is hot-headed and easy to anger, not to mention conceited. He constantly boasts about his strength, going so far as saying he is stronger than the Deadly Sins. Despite his claims, he never provides proof.

Whenever faced with danger, rather than using his fabled strength to defend himself and others, he immediately cries for help from his Mama. Like other annoying mascots, Hawk has an inappropriate streak and comes off very creepy to the women around him, Elizabeth in particular. Also much like other annoying animals, his role as a comic relief character turns up at the worst moments possible and ruins the atmosphere of a scene.

4 Meow Is A Lazy Slob And A Freeloader (Space Dandy)

Meow Space Dandy Goofy Face

In the series Space Dandy, Meow is an alien from the planet Betelgeuse and a friend of Dandy, though he tends to call him more of a freeloader. Meow is very lazy and often a useless member of the group, despite believing himself to be of great importance. He spends most of his time lounging about, playing video games, and reading manga.

He never stops eating and leaves his trash everywhere, refusing to pick up after himself out of sheer laziness. He has poor hygiene, much to the dismay of his crew, and washes himself about as infrequently as he picks up after himself. All in all, Meow is a useless member of his team and far from a cute animal companion.

3 Gonbe's Mimicry Of His Owner Is Creepy Instead Of Cute (One Piece)

Gonbe One Piece Anime Creepy Grin

Gonbe is Chimney's pet "cat" in the series One Piece. He has big, creepy eyes that stare out blankly and a wide, toothy grin. His appearance is uncannily similar to that of his owner. In the same fashion, he mimics everything Chimney does and follows her everywhere she goes. For reasons unknown, he thinks he is a cat despite clearly being a rabbit.

His appearance and copycat movements make him very unsettling and annoying to watch. He and Chimney are exhausting to watch and it is always a relief when they are gone.

2 Sparkle Is A Bossy And Self-centered Hamster (Hamtaro)

Sparkle Hamtaro Anime Annoyed Expression

Sparkle is a famous popstar hamster introduced in the series Hamtaro. Despite her adorable appearance, her attitude is far from cute. She is snob and selfish, always putting herself and her fame above all else. She puts down the Ham-Hams and constantly says she is better than them. She is spoiled and arrogant, believing herself to be better than the other hamsters simply due to her fame. She does improve as the series continues, warming up to the Ham-Hams eventually.

She even develops a crush on Hamtaro in the Japanese version and becomes close friends with Bijou. However, her initial introduction leaves a negative impression on her character. She plays no part in the series, spending most of it as a pest.

1 Albert Chamomile Is More Of A Pain Than An Advisor To Negi (Negima! Magister Negi Magi)

Chamo Negima Blushing Face

Albert Chamomile, also known as Chamo, is a chain-smoking and selfish ermine and Negi Springfield's advisor. He sometimes isn't much of an advisor, as guidance tends to lead to trouble. Though he does care for Negi, he cares much more for himself. He focuses more on the "get rich quick" schemes he creates. He uses Negi in these schemes, often putting him in awkward situations. Chamo is also very creepy when it comes to the females in Negi's life.

He enjoys keeping track of the girls' feelings on Negi and announces his findings to the group, making everyone uncomfortable. While Chamo has his uses and aids Negi well at times as an advisor, his bad habits make him a huge pain and more trouble than he's worth.
