AMC has given the green light to the previously announced Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series, which is slated to arrive in the summer of 2022.

Season 1 will tell six original, one-hour standalone stories with both new and familiar characters, all set in the Walking Dead Universe. Channing Powell serves as showrunner and will work closely with franchise veteran and Walking Dead Universe CCO Scott M. Gimple, with production expected to kick off in early 2022.

"The Walking Dead is a show that made television history and attracted an army of passionate and highly engaged fans," AMC Networks and AMC Studios President of Original Programming Dan McDermott said. "We see so much potential for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling in this world, and the episodic anthology format of Tales of the Walking Dead will give us the flexibility to entertain existing fans and also offer an entry point for new viewers, especially on streaming platforms. We have seen the appeal of this format in television classics like The Twilight Zone and, more recently, Black Mirror, and are excited to engage with fans in this new way, against the backdrop of this very unique and engrossing world."

"This series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas -- bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before," Gimple added. "I’m thrilled to be Channing’s consigliere, helping in every way I can to make those new visions real for the best fans in TV."

Tales of the Walking Dead was announced in September 2020, along with the news that The Walking Dead would end with Season 11 and that a Daryl/Carol spinoff was in development. While it's unclear which stars from the core show, Fear the Walking Dead or The Walking Dead: World Beyond will reprise their roles, Sonequa Martin-Green previously expressed interest in bringing Sasha Williams back.

"I'd love it," she said in October 2020. "I'd loooooove it. I love Sasha. I love The Walking Dead. That was my family before this family. What a blessing, by the way, that I've been able to be in two situations back to back that were so familiar that have such reach. I would love to. That would be so much fun."
