Over the years, Star Wars has expanded its lightsaber lore quite a bit. At first, there were just blue and red lightsabers, but green made its way into fandom before the end of the original trilogy. From there, things only got more complicated. Of course, there's Master Windu's purple lightsaber, but the yellow, orange, magenta, cyan, brown, white and the now-iconic Darksaber all slowly made their way into the lore. But when Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2014, quite a few changes followed.

In Legends material, when Force users chose their Kyber crystals, the color would denote their specific connection to the Force. Jedi Sentinels would use yellow lightsabers; Jedi Guardians used blue, and Jedi Consular used green. Meanwhile, Sith made their own synthetic, red crystals. In canon, that system has fallen by the wayside, but Disney did add a cool new feature to the lightsaber lore, and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi should offer some valuable insight on the subject. Specifically, Ahsoka's white lightsabers should be better explained.

Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka's white lightsabers first appeared in Star Wars Rebels, and since then, they have become some of the most popular weapons in the franchise. At first, no one knew why they were white, but Disney has since offered an explanation. And it all goes back to Kyber crystals.

In the new canon, all Kyber crystals start out clear. Then, as a Force-user bonds with their crystal, it turns one of a number of colors. Exactly what those colors mean is still up for debate, with some fans still kind of giving the Legend's system some credence. The biggest difference, however, is that Sith no longer use synthetic crystals. Rather, they would steal Kyber crystals from Jedi, and torture them to the point where they literally bleed. That turns the color blood-red, symbolizing the hate that defines the Sith. While torturing a crystal seems demented, the process could be reversed, and that's what Ahsoka did.

In the 2016 Ahsoka novel, Ahsoka fought against an Inquisitor called the Sixth Brother. After defeating him, she took his Kyber crystals as her own. Then, to make her own weapons, Ahsoka healed the crystals, purifying them. That returned them to their original clear state, which made a pair of white lightsaber blades. Parts of the Ahsoka novel were mildly retconned by Season 7 of The Clone Wars, but Tales of the Jedi should confirm that this story is still canon.

Based on the teaser that debuted at Star Wars Celebration, Tales of the Jedi will show Ahsoka facing off with the Sixth Brother. So, that confrontation will once again be canon, and fans can only hope that they get to see Ahsoka making her lightsabers in the series, too. Finding out exactly how she healed the Kyber crystals will be of particular interest. Maybe, there will even be more information on why the crystals didn't change colors when Ahsoka bonded with them. That could even lead back into the discussion of whether Ahsoka will ever officially be a Jedi again. All in all, Tales of the Jedi looks very exciting, and if Ahsoka's lightsabers are involved, fans will be here for it.

Tales of the Jedi will premiere in the fall of 2022.
