Batton Lash's Tales of Supernatural Law, published by Exhibit A Press, is a finalist in the graphic novel category for two major book awards: Publishers Marketing Association's Benjamin Franklin Awards and ForeWord magazine's Book of the Year Awards (BOYA). In addition, the book has been nominated to be included in a major American Library Association recommended reading list.
PMA: The PMA Benjamin Franklin Award recognizes excellence in independent publishing. Publications, grouped by genre, are judged on editorial and design merit by top practitioners in each field. The trophies are awarded to the best books in several categories. The winners will be announced during a ceremony on Wednesday evening, May 17, 2006 at the Washington, DC Convention Center, just prior to the opening of Book Expo America. There are three nominees in the graphic novel category; the other two are Nancy Drew: The Demon of River Heights by Stefan Petrucha and Sho Murase (published by Papercutz) and North Country by Shane White (published by NBM).
BOYA: ForeWord magazine's Book of the Year Award was established to bring increased attention from librarians and booksellers to the literary achievements of independent publishers and their authors. A jury of librarians, booksellers, and reviewers judge the categories for entry, and they select winners and finalists based on editorial excellence and professional production as well as the originality of the narrative and the value the book adds to its genre. Besides Tales of Supernatural Law, there are eight other finalists in the graphic novel category, including two from Tokypop and two from NBM. Bronze, Silver, Gold medalists will be announced at the awards ceremony at BEA in Washington DC, Friday, May 19th at 3 p.m.
YALSA: The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association, is compiling a list of Great Graphic Novels for Teens that will be announced at the end of this year. To be nominated, graphic novels must have been published between September 1, 2005 and December 31, 2006; they cannot be nominated by the publisher or creator. Tales of Supernatural Law is one of 58 books that have been nominated to date and that will be narrowed down to a final list by a blue-ribbon committee.
