Taken 3 Already Being Developed

You didn’t see the last of Bryan Mills in Taken 2: Liam Neeson will likely be back in Taken 3, which is already taking shape.

Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen spilled the news to that Taken 2 did so well in its first weekend that Fox decided a third film is in order. “We didn’t start talking about [it] until we saw the numbers,” Kamen said. “But then we said, ‘Oh, okay. I think we should do a third one.’ And Fox wants us to do a third one.”

So where will the franchise go from here? Taken followed Mills saving his daughter after she was kidnapped internationally, and then Taken 2 shows his daughter having to save him. Kamen is aware they can’t use the same formula a third time without tweaking it a bit.

“We’ve taken everyone we can take,” he said. “It’s going to go in another direction.”

This Taken sequel sounds like it’s come about the same way Taken 2 did. Kamen explained that Fox never planned on doing a follow-up to Neeson’s 2008 action thriller until it had a fantastic opening weekend. At that point, they realized they needed to give Mills another adventure.

“We never talked about a sequel,” Kamen said, “But when we had this thing, a phenomenon, we took a look at it and said, ‘What’s the phenomenon?’ It was a man striving to be reunited with his family. On the flip side, we had a man who just lost his family. We went from there.”

Taken 2 sees Neeson return as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a “particular set of skills” who killed many men in the previous film to save his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace). The father of one of those men (Rade Sherbedgia) now swears revenge, and takes Bryan’s wife (Famke Janssen) hostage in Istanbul. So Bryan naturally turns to Kim for help.

Produced by Luc Besson and directed by Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3, Colombiana) from a script by Besson and Kamen, Taken 2 opened Oct. 5.
