Taken 2 Dominates Box Office, But Frankenweenie Disappoints

Fans of the 2009 Liam Neeson showcase of bad-assness Taken won't be surprised that its sequel dominated theaters in its first weekend, earning $50 million domestically and another $55 million internationally, for a worldwide opening total of $105 million.

Unfortunately for Disney and Tim Burton, their latest effort Frankenweenie underperformed, landing in the fifth spot with $11.5 million in the North American box office. The black-and-white, stop-motion adaptation of Burton's 1984 live-action short couldn't beat out three other movies that debuted the previous week.

Universal's Pitch Perfect opened wide on Friday, allowing the musical comedy to add $14.7 million to the previous week's haul of $5.2 million. Hotel Transvlania and Looper also stuck around at No. 2 and No. 4 respectively, raking in $26.3 and $12.2 million.

Overall, ticket sales were up 43 percent over the same weekend in 2011. We'll see if the momentum can continue this weekend as Ben Affleck's Oscar contender Argo, Kevin James' mixed martial arts comedy Here Comes the Boom and Ethan Hawke's haunted horror Sinister all make their debuts.
