The following contains spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder, now playing in theaters.

Thor: Love and Thunder director, actor and co-writer Taika Waititi discussed his inclusion of more LGBTQ+ storytelling in recent projects.

Taika Waititi has been known lately for his telling of queer romantic stories, notably in the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death and the latest Marvel Studio movie Thor: Love and Thunder. Speaking with Out, Waititi explained that his storytelling is rooted in the relatability of basic human emotions. "We're all queer," Waititi said, "Just to varying degrees of where we are on the [sexuality] spectrum, I think. I think, innately, humans have all got some degree of queerness in them."

Thor: Love and Thunder sees both Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie and Waititi's Korg expresses their sexual orientation verbally and in action. In the same interview, the director said that he was very happy about finally getting both of their characters to a place where they could be queer.

In the film, Valkyrie opened up about her same-sex relationships and heartbreak in a heart-to-heart conversation with Korg. On the other hand, Korg expressed his fondness for seeing Thor naked and told Valkyrie about his species' tradition of same-sex relationships. In the end, Korg participated in a ritual with another Kronan that was roughly equivalent to being Marvel's first on-screen gay wedding. Although Tessa's character didn't get her happy ending in the film, she had a brief but exceptional moment flirting with Zeus' lady friends before disappearing with Thor again.

The fourth Thor film isn't the only project where Waititi showcased his fondness for queer storytelling. The director credited Our Flag Means Death for earning him the title of queer icon. Speaking about the series that brought him the title, the director revealed that it was something that happened naturally. "What drew me to Our Flag Means Death was the love story between Blackbeard and Stede," he said. Although the director loved the reception and support from fans, he also revealed that he never really imagined being called a queer icon.

Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins, is romantic comedy television series set in the early 18th century. It follows the unfortunate journey of pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and his crew while crossing paths with famous pirate captain Blackbeard, portrayed by Waititi himself. HBO Max has renewed the series for Season 2.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now in theaters. Our Flag Means Death is available to stream on HBO Max.
