Summary
The Woman King stars Viola Davis as General Nanisca, a general of the kingdom of Dahomey in Africa, as she seeks to protect her kingdom from would-be invaders. When Nanisca discovers many of their people have been kidnapped by European slave traders aligned with the Oyo empire, Nanisca is tasked by King Ghezo (John Boyega) to create a new generation of warrior women to join the elite military unit - the Agojie. Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) shows promise and eventually becomes one of these elite warriors and joins Nanisca to act against Oyo and free their people while deposing their kingdom. However, Nawi's recklessness will require Nanisca to take on a drastic rescue mission that could compromise their victory. The Woman King is based on events surrounding the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries and was released in theaters on September 16 2022.
