The script for the so-called Black Superman film has been in the works since February 2021 and is reportedly close to completion. As yet though, there is no word on the next stage of preparation going ahead and filming dates or schedule has yet to be announced for the movie. Michael B. Jordan has been linked with the role of Superman and has claimed there is a "huge upside" to being able to play the character but also added that he would rather "do something original." No cast members have been announced either and the part of Superman is still up for grabs at the time of writing.

A Superman Story for a New Day

The movie will also see J.J Abrams come on board to help shepherd production with his Bad Robot studio, whilst Hannah Minghella is also penciled in as a producer. Speaking at the time, Abrams stated that there is "a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told." Abrams added that he "couldn't be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we're beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity."

Coates wrote Volume Six in the Black Panther series of comics for Marvel. He followed that up with another volume titled Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda and also penned a spinoff series called Black Panther and The Crew. In 2018, he switched to working for the Captain America series of comics, writing volume nine. The Black Superman project marks his first foray into writing a screenplay for a film.

The latest film from DC Studios, Black Adam, is available to watch now in theaters or to stream via HBO Max. Coates' Superman project does not yet have a release date.
