Anthony Mackie will experience a horror-filled take on time travel in the film Synchronic.

Mackie portrays New Orleans paramedic Steve, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Steve and his partner Dennis (Jamie Dornan) experience a series of bizarre deaths linked with a new drug called Synchronic. When Steve tries the drug, his perception on time slowly unravels and he is pulled into a horrifying new reality.

Synchronic is directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (The Endless), with Benson penning the screenplay. The film had its premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where it received rave reviews. Though Synchronic will premiere in theaters later this year, Benson and Moorhead cautioned against going to theaters in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

"Due to distribution arrangements that are out of our control, the release of Synchronic into drive-ins and indoor theaters has been confirmed for October 23rd," the filmmakers said in a joint statement with producer David Lawson on Instagram. "But we want to be very clear: at the time of writing this, we personally wouldn’t go to an indoor movie theater, so we can’t encourage you to. To us, this isn’t only about feeling safe in a theater, this is also about the scientific community indicating that enclosed spaces like movie theaters are still a hazard for spreading COVID-19 to others."

Mackie is no stranger to genre films. He starred in Season 2 of the Netflix sci-fi series Altered Carbon, and will reprise his role as Sam Wilson for the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Synchronic will premiere in theaters on Oct. 23.
