Syfy’s <i>Defiance</i> Launches MMO/TV Cross-Promotion

Syfy’s freshman drama Defiance has a lot of hurdles to clear. Despite stellar reviews for its first few episodes, the property’s mission statement is to combine a science-fiction television show and Trion World’s Massive Multiplayer Online video game of the same name, using cross promotion to unite events in the MMO to the series and vice versa. So far, Grant Bowler’s character Joshua Nolan and Stephanie Leonidas’ character Irisa have crossed over from the show to the game, but Trion World has announced its first major initiative to bring players from the game to the show.

The official Defiance website has announced an in-game contest called “Most Wanted,” which tasks players to complete two in-game Pursuits before May 12, which will qualify them for a chance to get their likeness rendered “into a special place in an upcoming episode” by artists from the Defiance television show.

“We have really created something that’s big enough and broad enough that the show can be a hit and the game can be fun and not have to compromise,” said Mark Stern, Syfy’s president of original programming at Comic-Con International 2012. “Not since Battlestar [Galactica] have we done anything this ambitious. … The narrative and the story elements all work together.”

Defiance airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
