Syfy has renewed its time-travel mystery "12 Monkeys" for a second season, expected to air in 2016.

Starring Aaron Stanford ("Nikita," "X-Men: The Last Stand"), Amanda Schull ("Suits") and Kirk Acevedo ("Fringe," "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"), the series follows a time traveler who arrives in our present to prevent the spread of a deadly plague that will push humanity into a post-apocalyptic future.

"We are absolutely committed to '12 Monkeys,' and have been incredibly impressed by the outstanding critical and audience praise the series has earned," Syfy President Dave Howe said in a statement. "The talent both on and off-screen have delivered a series that has us all on the edge of our seats, providing exactly the smart, exciting storytelling Syfy is known for."

Natalie Chaidez will step down as showrunner to work on her next Syfy series; current co-executive producers and pilot writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett ("Nikita") will take her place.

"12 Monkeys" airs on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
