Syfy Mulls Waterworld TV Series

Syfy is considering developing a sequel to 1995’s Waterworld, the Kevin Costner-starring science fiction film that, at the time, was the most expensive movie ever made. However, instead of a film, Syfy wants to make a television series because the original movie performs well every time it airs on the cable network.

This news comes courtesy of Forbes, which recently talked to Syfy President David Howe. He said a Waterworld series has been “talked about endlessly” and remains a possibility for the network.

Waterworld cost a reported $235 million to make, but only brought in $88 million in the United States and an additional $175 million overseas. The Universal Pictures feature went on to have a better life on home video, and had 400,000 viewers the last time it aired on Syfy.

It makes sense that NBC Universal, which owns Syfy, would want to try to make the movie profitable if there is a continued interest in the 1995 project. Though it’s not announced yet, don’t be surprised if we hear about a Waterworld TV pilot being made in the next couple of years.
