Syfy is reteaming with Alice writer/director Nick Willing for Neverland, an original prequel to the J.M. Barrie classic Peter Pan.
The four-hour movie stars Rhys Ifans (Pirate Radio, Notting Hill) as James Hook, Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies) as Captain Elizabeth Bonny, Bob Hoskins as Smee (the role he played in Hook), Raoul Trujillo (Tin Man, True Blood) as the Kaw tribe holy man, and Charlie Rowe (Pirate Radio, The Golden Compass) as Peter Pan. Production begins next week in Genoa, Italy, and Dublin, Ireland. It’s set to air in 2011.
Neverland follows orphaned Peter who, along with his friends, survives as a pickpocket on the streets of turn-of-the-century London. They’re rounded up by their mentor Jimmy Hook to steal a priceless, and magical, treasure that transports them to Neverland, “a realm of white jungles and legendary mysteries of eternal youth, where unknown friends and enemies snatched from time welcome the new travelers with both excitement and trepidation.” Those include a the Native American Kaw tribe, which for ages has protected the secret of the tree spirits from a band of 18th-century band of pirates led by the power-mad Elizabeth Bonny. As the war rages to save the realm, Hook, Peter and the lost boys “consider that growing old somewhere in time could be less important than growing up — right here in their new home called Neverland.”
