In advance of 12 Monkeys' Jan. 16 premiere, Syfy has released the first nine minutes of the sci-fi mystery, based on the 1995 film of the same name.
The sneak preview starts out in the cold wreckage of America in the year 2043. A somber and contemplative voiceover from series lead Aaron Stanford plays out over footage of a pair of survivors searching through the remains of lab.
"Where are you right now?" the voiceover asks. "Somewhere warm? Safe? Next to someone you love? Now, what if all that was gone and the only thing you could do was survive. You would, right? You'd try, you'd do things horrible things until you lose that last thing you have left: yourself. But what if you could take it back, all of it? A reset switch? You'd hit it, right? You'd have to."
The clip then cuts back to our recent past -- to the year 2013, where we meet Cassandra Reilly (Amanda Schull). The tension escalates when Stanford's time-traveler character appears in Reilly's car, thus kicking off the series' mission of apocalypse prevention.
You can check out the full nine minutes below, or you can wait until 12 Monkeys debuts on Jan. 16.
