Right now, all of the X-Men titles are gearing up for the massive X of Swords crossover event. While we don't yet know what exactly will go down in the story or how it will end, Marvel did already reveal one thing it will lead to: the start of a new S.W.O.R.D. series by Al Ewing and Valerio Schiti. The title will see the return of the organization meant to deal with all manner of alien threats, and the new team at the heart of the series will include members such as Abigail Brand, Magneto, the young Cable, Manifold, Wiz Kid and more.

Originally, S.W.O.R.D. was a division of S.H.I.E.L.D., a branch of the organization that operated solely in space. But now, it looks like a big change is coming for S.W.O.R.D.: the agency will now fall under the X-Men umbrella.

S.W.O.R.D. is a powerful organization for the X-Men to have and, given everything we already know, it seems more and more likely that the mutants are about to declare war on the Marvel Universe.

Although the new S.W.O.R.D. series was just announced, we've already briefly seen the team in action at the end of the Empyre event. In fact, in Empyre Aftermath: Avengers #1, a brief glimpse at the future showed us Abigail Brand at the head of the new S.W.O.R.D., laying waste to the new Kree/Skrull Empire and their Emperor, Hulkling. The flash-forward showed Hulkling beaten and surrounded by dead bodies. And over him, Brand reigned, telling him she had succeeded in building something better than Alpha Flight.

The full context of this scene wasn't revealed but now, with the confirmation that S.W.O.R.D. is an X-Men outfit, we can determine that this attack on the Kree/Skrull Alliance was orchestrated by Earth's mutants.

Ever since the start of Dawn of X, the X-Men began to act in a more villainous manner. They might still be the mutants we know and love, but plenty of fans would argue that something is off about them. With the Quiet Council of Krakoa now in charge of everything, there's no telling who is really pulling the strings. Whatever the case may be, whether the mutants are actually in control or not, it doesn't change the fact that they have positioned themselves as superior to humanity.

The mutants are consolidating power, and they are becoming increasingly more dangerous, especially with figures such as Magneto, Apocalypse and Sebastian Shaw in their midst. They might only be trying to make sure they finally have a safe place in the world, but this is all clearly building up to something.

We already know that the X-Men will dismantle the Kree/Skrull Alliance in the near future. What's more, the young Cable, who will also be on the new S.W.O.R.D. team, also recently nearly committed genocide by killing all of the remaining Spaceknights except for one. Plus, ever since Broo consumed the Brood's King Egg, he is now in control of all Brood across the universe. This means the X-Men have access to an army of millions, if not trillions, of space monsters.

There seems to be a clear ramp up here. The X-Men are becoming more of a galactic powerhouse, and they have already begun to eliminate their enemies. If anything, it looks like they might be trying to become the biggest force in the galaxy to rival the Kree, the Skrulls, the Shi'ar and more. And if that happens, then the mutants will truly instigate a massive, cosmic war.

S.W.O.R.D. #1, by Al Ewing and Valerio Schiti, goes on sale in December from Marvel Comics.
