WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Sweet Tooth, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix's Sweet Tooth makes an endearing change to the Animal Army found in the comics, turning them from religious zealots to a group of teens who act as an eco-group. They want to protect hybrids like Gus (Christian Convery) in this adaptation, not kill them. As such, they have a vendetta against the Last Men. However, while a nasty civil war erupts, the split ends up giving Gus his best friend in Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen).

She's a new character to the lore and a sentimental one at that. Bear spots him early on at the train station, realizing he's a deer-boy. However, she helps protect him from bullies and clarifies that if he's in trouble, she's got his back. Later on, Bear rescues him from the soldiers, but the Animal Army takes Jepperd as well.

It's at this point things begin to fracture. She soon learns Jepperd is like a father to Gus and is willing to forgive the former soldier. Sadly, Tiger wants to kill Jepperd as letting him live is a sign of weakness. Their rivalry simmered for Sweet Tooths' entire season as the best friends clearly couldn't separate work from emotions. They believe Gus and his kind are miracles, letting nature rebuild itself and purge humanity, so Tiger wants to ensure people like Jepp don't roam free to turn on them.

Tiger tries to feed Jepp to a tiger, all while civil war breaks out with most supporters turning on Bear. They view their former founder and leader as corrupt. While Gus calms the big cat down, Bear knows it's time to head out. They all escape and end up trekking to Colorado, with Bear becoming his sister. She's also lost her family, and seeing as the Last Men were responsible, her actions are given clarity. However, just like Jepp has hope, optimism, faith and belief restored, Bear begins to believe in love and forgiveness again through the kid.

Gus needs her, too, because not everything will be relatable for Jepp. She's more caring, after all, keeping watch and acting less cold. She doesn't scold Gus in her teachings on the harsh world they're in, coming off like a counterpoint to the gruff ex-military man. The fact she was adopted emotionally connects her to Gus, especially when they discover he was made in a lab by Birdie.

It's going to get even more interesting come Season 2 because with Wendy/Pigtail now befriending Gus, once they're found, the secret will be revealed that Wendy's Bear's lost sister. In that sense, meeting Gus is allowing Bear to become more human again and embrace her old identity as Becky, all while Gus gets a family of his own again.

Sweet Tooth stars Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, Aliza Vellani, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez and Neil Sandilands, with Will Forte and James Brolin. Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
