Ron Burgundy, San Diego’s favorite anchorman, swung by Conan last night to jam on his jazz flute, critique host Conan O’Brien — “You look like someone put a bright-red fright wig on a skeleton and chucked it out of a helicopter” — and, most importantly, announce to “everyone here in the Americas, to our friends in Spain, Turkey and the U.K., including England,” that a sequel is in the works to the 2004 comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
Director Adam McKay later assured fans that “Anchorman 2 is 100% for sure happening,” writing on Twitter that he and Ferrell are writing the script now, with plans to begin shooting in February 2013. According to Deadline, the untitled follow-up will be produced by Ferrell and McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions and Judd Apatow Productions, with Paramount Pictures picking up the project from DreamWorks Pictures.
Who else is returning? So far, the bulk of the KVWN-TV Action News team: Steve Carell as weatherman Brick Tamland, Paul Rudd as reporter Brian Fantana, and David Koechner as sportscaster Champion “Champ” Kind. Whether Christina Applegate, Fred Willard and Chris Parnell will reprise their roles is unknown.
Although the original Anchorman grossed $90 million on a $26 million budget and developed a dedicated, dialogue-quoting following, the sequel has struggled to receive a greenlight. In fact, McKay himself declared the follow-up dead nearly two years ago.
