Last week it was confirmed that, despite rave reviews, DC Universe's Swamp Thing series had been canceled following the premiere of its debut episode. The rest of the episodes in Season 1 are set to be released as planned, but the show will not be returning for a second season.

A new report states the loss of additional seasons may have robbed fans of a buildup that would have resulted in the debut of DC's magical team, Justice League Dark.

According to Business Insider, a source claims a potential three-season arc was discussed on Swamp Thing's set, and crew members believed the show could have lasted even longer than that. The source also claims the idea of Swamp Thing characters spinning off into their own shows was thrown around, with a Justice League Dark team-up spinoff series mentioned as a possibility.

For the uninitiated, the Justice League Dark is an offshoot of the main Justice League lineup that specializes in supernatural threats. The team debuted in their own series as a part of DC Comics' New 52 lineup in 2011.

Justice League Dark's founding members include John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Madame Xanadu and Shade the Changing Man, with Swamp Thing joining the fray later on. DC's Justice League Dark title was relaunched in 2018 with the new lineup of Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Detective Chimp and Man-Bat.

With the news of Swamp Thing's cancellation, however, it appears the three-season arc will not come to pass, with the likelihood of any DC Universe spinoffs now slim.

DC has yet to make a detailed announcement regarding the official reason for Swamp Thing's cancellation. For the time being, those with questions are simply being pointed to a DC Universe community post, which reads, "We appreciate there are questions as to 'why,' but unfortunately we are not in a position to answer at this time."
