James Mangold Tapped to Write and Direct Swamp Thing

DC Studios reportedly hired the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director earlier in 2023. The day before news broke, Mangold posted artwork of Swamp Thing by Bernie Wrightson to his Twitter account, leading fans to believe he had an interest in the project. Mangold's adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Old Man Logan series in 2017's Login, originally intended as the last outing for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, earned considerable praise from critics and fans.

DC Studios Announces New Film Slate

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" for the new DC film slate earlier this year. Along with Swamp Thing, other movies include Superman: Legacy, The Authority, Supergirl: World of Tomorrow and The Brave and the Bold. According to Safran, although the films will be connected, they won't all share the same tone -- something many Marvel fans have complained about with their recent entries.

"We bring it up because it's important to point out that in these stories, although they're interconnected, they're not all tonally the same," Safran said. "Each set of filmmakers bring their own aesthetic to these films, and the fun is seeing how these tonally different works mash up in the future." In particular, Safran noted that Swamp Thing's tone would be different. Notably, the film "will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing," a type of story uncommon these days among reboots.

DC Comics introduced Swamp Thing in 1971's House of Secrets #92, with the character created by Len Wein. Louisiana scientist Dr. Alec Holland turned into the plant-based monster after getting drenched in chemicals from his lab, the formula of which is intended to end the hunger crisis in starving countries.

Swamp Thing does not yet have a release date.
