Swamp Thing originally premiered on the DC Universe streaming app in May 2019. The series focuses on the origins of the creature known as Swamp Thing. After biologist Alec Holland appeared to die in a Louisiana swamp, he re-emerged as a massive creature comprised of swamp vegetation.

The series was produced by Aquaman director James Wan and drew praise for its take on the Swamp Thing mythology; it ran for a total of 10 episodes. After news of its cancellation emerged, a #SaveSwampThing movement erupted on social media.
