DC Universe adds another name to its roster of live-action heroes and villains with the announcement that Ian Ziering is slated to portray B-list hero Blue Devil on the live-action Swamp Thing series.
The Sharknado star is will play Daniel Cassidy, a stuntman/movie star who, in DC Comics lore, becomes a reluctant superhero when the blue devil costume he wears for a movie series becomes permanently bonded to his skin as the result of a misunderstanding with a real demon. A second side effect of the accident is that Cassidy becomes a "weirdness magnet," attracting all manner of supernatural entities to his life. Thus, the former Hollywood rising star becomes a reluctant superhero known as the Blue Devil.
The character breakdown is as follows:
Stuntman turned movie star, Daniel Cassidy became semi-famous after playing the demonic Blue Devil. But now, eight years later, Cassidy finds himself living out his days in frustration, pining for his former fame while on a collision course with destiny.
It's not clear whether Cassidy will already be Blue Devil when we meet him in the series, but artwork accompanying the announcement makes it clear Blue Devil will be a part of his life in some form. Presented as a vintage one-sheet poster, the image shows Ziering reimagined as the cyan-hued hero in a movie titles, aptly, The Adventures of Blue Devil.
The poster also gives away two more characters who may or may not be cast for the series. First is Sharon Scott, the love interest for Cassidy for the character's first few appearances in 1984's Blue Devil comic. Then we have Wayne Tarrant, another character from Blue Devil's early days, who is ultimately responsible for setting into motion the chain of events that lead to Cassidy becoming stuck in his costume.
Even more intriguing, however, is the masked man in the bottom left of the poster. While it's probably safe to assume he's someone portrayed by Tarrant in the fictional film, the costume is actually that of the DC supervillain known as Bolt. In the comics, Bolt is a special effects artist who becomes a costumed assassin. He has the ability to teleport and shoot blasts of energy. A member of Blue Devil's rogues gallery, it would make sense that he'll also make the leap to television alongside the reluctant hero in some form.
Executive produced by James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman, Swamp Thing will premiere sometime in 2019 on the DC Universe. The supernatural horror series stars Crystal Reed, Andy Bean, Derek Mears, Jennifer Beals, Henderson Wade, Will Patton, Virginia Madsen, Jeryl Prescott, Henderson Wade and Kevin Durand.
