A major piece of the "Independence Day" sequel puzzle appears to be in place: The Hollywood Reporter has word that actor Jessie Usher has been cast as the "central character" of the 2016 film, the son of Will Smith's character from the 1996 original.

Usher currently stars in "Survivor's Remorse," a basketball-themed comedy on Starz produced by LeBron James. Though the 23-year-old Usher will play the son of Smith's character, Will Smith has been previously reported as not returning for the sequel. In late January, Liam Hemsworth was named as a contender for the film's lead; it's unclear at this point if Usher's casting affects Hemsworth's chances.

The "Independence Day" sequel has a scheduled release date of June 24, 2016; approximately 20 years after the original sci-fi blockbuster debuted. Roland Emmerich, who directed the first installment, is set to return, as is producer Dean Devlin.

Update: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liam Hemsworth has also been cast in a lead role, with Jeff Goldblum reprising his role from the original film.
