WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for WWE Survivor Series 2019

WWE superstar Rey Mysterio used his ring gear to pay homage to Joaquin Phoenix's cinematic version of the Joker at the 2019 Survivor Series pay-per-view event.

Mysterio (real name Óscar Gutiérrez) turned up to Chicago's Allstate Arena sporting a white mask reminiscent of the makeup Phoenix wore as the Clown Prince of Crime -- complete with green hair, blue trimmings around the eyes, as well as a red nose, red "eyebrows" and red details around the mouth area to emulate a smile. Mysterio also sported a red coat over his red, green and yellow tights. The Master of the 619 challenged WWE Champion Brock Lesnar for his title in a No Holds Barred match, but was ultimately unsuccessful in taking home the gold.

This is actually the second time Mysterio has used his ring gear to pay tribute to an on-screen incarnation of the Joker. Ten years ago, at 2009's WrestleMania 25, Mysterio donned an outfit that honored Heath Ledger's version of the iconic Batman villain from the 2008 film The Dark Knight. Mysterio fared better as Ledger's Joker, defeating John "Bradshaw" Layfield in 20 seconds to capture the Intercontinental Championship.

Mysterio -- a major fan of superheroes -- has been known to wear ring gear based on some of his favorite comic book characters for key PPV events. In fact, his Joker homage is the second example in under eight months. At this year's WrestleMania back in April, Mysterio suited up as none other Marvel Comics' Mysterio ahead of the classic Spider-Man villain's live-action debut in July's Spider-Man: Far From Home.  Other comic book characters Mysterio has dressed as for major WWE matches over the years include Daredevil, the Flash, Captain America, Silver Surfer and Batman.
