Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman has found the Last Daughter of Krypton in between a rock and a hard place. In this future timeline, the hero formerly known as Supergirl abandoned Earth, angry that Superman wanted the mantle of protector and House of El sigil officially passed down to Jon Kent rather than her. However, she still loves the broken planet and is now creating her version of what that utopia should be but on the moon, building a Fortress of Solitude that acts as an alien haven.
However, in Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman #2, Kara's story comes to an end after a battle with a powerful cosmic entity, but it's a pitch-perfect conclusion that sees her let go of all her emotional baggage.
In this future, Kara's been cynical for some time now, but working with the universe's refugees has given her hope. Sadly, Kimara, a serpent-like monster, has come for Lynari, a power-absorbing alien, she took in. Kimara is her aunt and wants the Starfall Jewel, which could give her niece powers that could destroy the rest of their species. As Kara tries to intervene, though, she learns how anger in the family acts as a poison and remembers that forgetting the past can be the cure.
Kimara admits the gem was used to turn Lynari's side of the family into elites, leaving her side to suffer. It's caused division, and she wants to kill her niece to stop her people from ever being subjugated again. After all, she's afraid that Lynari might come to wipe them out if she ever grows that hateful. But Lynari isn't, and she absorbs Kara's powers and uses the gem, not just to restrain her aunt, but to burn their powers out.
They're left permanently in their humanoid form, and Lynari promises not to be like her relatives. She believes that they've got to leave this civil war behind and live a future filled with hope, love, peace and light. Clearly, Kara has impressed on her and in time, as they grow old together, the rest of Lynari and Kimara's people come to integrate into this society too. It's the paradise Kara always dreamed of and reflects what she wanted Earth to become. Whether it's with the Legion of Super-Heroes or other groups, Kara wanted this kind of paradise for everyone and she's glad she got to see it happen.
And as much as the aliens learned from the Kryptonian, she learned from them. Even after she gets her powers back, Kara's never the same as she ages, suggesting that the gem may have impacted her, and eventually dies, having lived a full and happy life. She's even buried next to Krypto, who even has a ball on his grave in a heartbreaking touch.
Ironically, she doesn't pass the Superwoman or Supergirl mantle on, because she's over the idea of it being a role or a physical symbol. Instead of being passed down to a chosen heir, Superwoman is a way of living that can long outlast her.
