Ahead of Supernatural’s return in October, Misha Collins -- who plays Castiel on the hit show -- has broken down the impending war between the Winchesters and God, as well as his character's relationship with his father.
“Cas actually gave up on his dad, God, in Season 9, I wanna say,” Misha Collins informed EW. “I think that he has come to terms with the fact that God is not going to be the father figure that he had hoped for. So I think the pill is a little easier to swallow of God showing up and being the big bad.”
When it comes to their struggle against God, Collins added: “This is, as far as we know, the most powerful being in the universe and he’s against us, and we thought he was good.”
Having discovered that their entire lives have been scripted by God, Castiel and the Winchesters decided to go off-script during the finale of Season 14. God then triggered the end of the world, killing Jack and opening the gates of hell before swarms of zombies staggered through, surrounding them. When it comes to rebelling against their set story, Collins admitted that their characters are “adjusting how we frame our existence," confessing that Castiel is not dealing with Jack’s death well, shouldering the guilt and responsibility of the loss.
“Cas is not coping well with Jack’s death because he feels responsible,” Collins says. “He made a promise that he was going to protect Jack and now, not only did Jack sort of turn toward the dark side, but he also died and it feels like a huge failure for him.”
Returning Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW for its final season, Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins and Alexander Calvert.
