Sometimes you make a connection that just makes things much darker than they originally were. A Reddit fan theory connecting the TV series Supernatural and the movie Frailty is the perfect example of this. The theory claims that the two stories are about the same father and his two sons, just told from different perspectives. As many fantasy/horror fans know, Supernatural is about two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, who after their mother was killed by the demon Azazel, go on to fight and exorcise demons. Frailty is a less well-known psychological horror movie about a man who kills people he believes to be demons, much to the dismay of his eldest son, who reports him to the police.

The plots of the movie and the show are undoubtedly similar, as they both focus on killing demons. Supernatural takes more of a fantasy horror approach, confirming that demons are in fact real and have to be killed and stopped by the Winchesters, while Frailty is a psychological horror that implies that the father is actually killing innocent people instead of real demons. Interestingly, the perspective of the father in Frailty could also give some interesting insights into John Winchester's psyche after the death of Mary Winchester at the hands of Azazel.

Frailty provides a much darker take on Supernatural's demon hunting storyline and the possibility the two are related will most likely make fans of the show view the Winchesters in a different light. It also makes the movie something completely different, as the connection would mean the "demons" in Frailty were actually from the pits of hell and genuine threats to society, which then led to Sam and Dean Winchester taking over as the family demon hunters from their father. However, in order for the different Winchester perspectives theory to make sense, Frailty would have to be a fantasy horror film as opposed to a psychological thriller.

The main reason why this theory doesn't work is because of the opposing genres. The psychological horror aspect of Frailty doesn't go well with the fantasy horror of Supernatural. The role of the elder brother in Frailty, who would be Dean in Supernatural's case, also proves that this theory isn't valid, as he thinks  his father is dangerous and later reports his crimes to the local police station. While John and Dean Winchester undoubtedly have a complicated relationship in Supernatural, it is never implied that Dean thinks that John is a danger, and Dean actually likes John better than Sam does.

The younger brother in Frailty idolizes his father, which is a far cry from how Sam Winchester sees his on Supernatural. Sam has a very rocky relationship with his father. He resents John for the way he raised Sam and his brother -- John was always fiercely protective of Sam to the point where he became overwhelming. Sam later acknowledges that he is too similar to his father, which is why they constantly butt heads.

While this fan theory connecting Supernatural and Frailty is certainly interesting, it starts to unravel after closer analysis. The show and the movie are undoubtedly similar in concept and genre, but the psychological horror nature of Frailty makes it difficult to connect it properly with the fantasy horror world of Supernatural, where demons are recognized as real threat. This fan theory also fails to account for other supernatural creatures in the TV show, like angels and Leviathans. While this theory does provide a darker take on the Supernatural universe, it's clear that the movie and the show aren't connected in any way. However, Frailty is very similar in concept to Supernatural, and would be a great movie to watch for any fans of the show.
