Editor Matt Webb Mitovich recently shared his Supernatural inside scoop with readers regarding Castiel's fate in the hit fantasy adventure's last season on The CW.

Mitovich revealed that the show will return to Castiel's relationship and deal with The Empty, as portrayed by Rachel Miner, in the series' final episodes, as reported by TVLine.

Mitovich's information came directly from Supernatural's co-showrunner, Andrew Dabb. Dabb said, "It’s something we introduced last year, knowing to a degree where it was going. The story can always take twists and turns... But obviously, The Empty’s been a little bit more of a character this year, played by Rachel Miner, who’s done a great job," he said. "It has still got a grudge against Cas, and that will not go away."

Castiel is no stranger to death, resurrection, celestial marks that warp the mind and The Empty's eternal slumber. However, he always managed to escape by the grace of himself or forgiveness of God. Now that the series' ending is a literal face-off against God -- and his image of a world without humanity -- it seems likely that Cas' luck won't be the same as it was in prior seasons. Dabb seemed to suggest that this time Cas won't be able to survive the upcoming battle without a consequence from his past, namely, retribution for escaping The Empty's grasp.

The last Castiel saw of The Empty was in Season 15, Episode 13, where its blonde-haired and chardonnay drinking embodiment darkly said, "See you soon," but only after momentarily putting Cas in insurmountable pain.
