As Supernatural begins its fifteenth and final season, tensions are high between the Winchesters and Castiel. Considering their initial confrontation with God, the season's antagonist, Castiel actor Misha Collins addressed why his character takes his father's betrayal so personally.
"Cass feels he's losing Sam and Dean, the only other people in the universe he has a connection to," Collins told TV Insider. "[God] becoming his primary enemy bent on destroying everything he cares about is a really difficult transition [for Castiel] to go through." At one point, Cass reportedly takes a leave of absence before returning to the fight. Collins described it as Castiel leaving "in a huff."
His co-star, Jenson Ackles, shared that there was a sense of closure during the shooting of a particular scene, comparing it to the final episode of Cheers.
"There's a scene we shot recently that really got to me. Cass decides he's going away for a while. And it wasn't necessarily a goodbye, but it felt like that to me," Ackles said. "It made me think about how it's the last time we're going to [have a moment like] that. [It reminded me of] the last episode of Cheers when someone knocked on the door and Sam [Ted Danson] said, 'Sorry, we're closed.'
Returning Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW for its final season, Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Alexander Calvert.
