Superman writer Joshua Williamson told CBR that Brainiac will play a big role for DC in 2023.

Williamson sat down with CBR for an exclusive "Spoilers of Steel" interview to discuss Superman #1. Officially launching on Feb. 21, 2023, "Spoilers of Steel" is a new CBR exclusive interview series with the Superman creative team releasing on the day of every new issue. In the interview, Williamson said that Brainiac will play a major role in the entire "Dawn of DC" publishing initiative throughout 2023. "[The ending] teases not only what’s coming for Superman but Dawn of DC this year," Williamson said. "It’s not about Brainiac here, Brainiac is a much bigger player in the DCU and Dawn of DC."

Superman Enters the Dawn of DC

Announced at New York Comic-Con in 2022, Superman is a new ongoing series from Williamson and artist Jamal Campbell. A preview released on Feb. 17, 2023, for the first issue reveals that Lex Luthor, who has been sent to prison following the events of Action Comics #1050, is now constantly communicating with the Man of Steel through the use of Clark Kent's super-hearing while enemies such as Livewire are terrorizing Metropolis.

The synopsis for Superman #1 reads, "IT’S THE DAWN OF DC! Superman has returned to Metropolis and his greatest enemy Lex Luthor is finally behind bars. The future of the Superman family has never been brighter! As Clark Kent settles back into his life, iconic and new enemies erupt from the shadows to strike down the Man of Steel! But waiting in the wings to back up Big Blue is…Supercorp?! What secret project has Lex given to Superman?! “A hero is only as good as their villains” will be put to the test in this brand-new oversize #1 featuring comics’ greatest superhero by DC Comics architect Joshua Williamson and award-winning superstar artist Jamal Campbell!"

Superman isn't the only Man of Steel-starring series that's part of the "Dawn of DC" event. Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent from Tom Taylor and Clayton Henry launches March 7, 2023, and sees Jon Kent/Superman try to stop Ultraman from disrupting the entire DC multiverse, including the Injustice universe. Action Comics, meanwhile, has already started a new storyline pitting Clark against Metallo and, soon, Cyborg Superman. Additionally, Superman: Lost is a new ten-issue series from Christopher Priest, Carlo Pagulayan and Jason Paz launching March 14, 2023, that places the Last Son of Krypton in the middle of a cosmic time-travel mystery.
