WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Green Lantern: Blackstars, by Grant Morrison, Xermanico, Steve Oliff and Steve Wands, on sale Jan. 29 from DC Comics.

After twelve issues, Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp's The Green Lantern saw Mu and the Blackstars rewrite reality using the Miracle Machine. This led to Green Lantern: Blackstars, which has pit Hal Jordan/Parallax against his allies on Earth as the title group attempts to subjugate the planet in its twisted quest to bring peace to the universe.

There's perhaps no hero Hal has angered more than Clark Kent/Superman, whose son, Jon Kent, has joined up with the Blackstars. The act, which took place in Green Lantern: Blackstars #2, effectively started a war between the Blackstars and the Justice League. Now, the preview for Green Lantern: Blackstars #3 has revealed the opening battle in that war.

Superman storms the Blackstars' headquarters, believing his son to have been captured. As that happens, Earth's heroes battle the Blackstars outside. Jon tells his father that he's in fact made the choice to join with the group, which results in the younger Kent blasting his father. The two then fight in space. During their battle, Jon taunts his father, saying, "You hate your kids! You hold us back! You put us down! You tell us there's no future! But that's just you. You're the ones who have no future!"

While the Blackstars are definitely formidable, Earth has a lot of powerful heroes that could end up taking the team down. However, there's none consistently stronger than Superman, who has proven over and over again that he's capable of defeating even the most fearsome foes. Bringing Jon Kent into the fold is a very good way for the Blackstars to increase the amount of muscle they have and make taking the Earth possible. On his own, Jon could stand against many of Earth's heroes, as his Kryptonian heritage makes him quite formidable. Even if he doesn't defeat Superman, he's still strong enough that he could very likely push their battle to a stand still for long enough to allow the Blackstars to carry out their plans. Plus, Superman's unwillingness to harm his son means he's probably not going to be fighting with his full strength. Superboy versus Superman is certain to be a pitched battle, and no matter who wins, the Earth loses.

Green Lantern: Blackstars #3 goes on sale Jan. 29 from DC Comics.
