Reader Diane L. wrote in to ask, "I see in your post from 1/31/2012 that Superman helps the Boy Scouts. Does Clark Kent as a boy or teenager ever put on a Scout uniform?"

That post was about whether Superboy was ever a boy scout, which he famously was in an issue of Superboy.

Superman, of course, is famously referred to as a boy scout by his fellow superheroes...

DC has always been supportive of the Boy Scouts in the past, like this awesome tribute to the Boy Scouts that they had in their comics in 1950...

One year later, they had their famous Superboy issue where Superboy joins the Boy Scouts as a literal Superboy Scout...

Notice the bottom left hand corner. See what the comic book was helping to raise money for, the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes, at the time, was dedicated to helping to cure polio. Amazingly enough, you see the 1950 Boy Scout Jamboree that was being advertised? The first time there was a nationwide Boy Scout jamboree was 15 years earlier, as a 25th Anniversary celebration. It didn't actually occur. Guess why? THERE WAS A POLIO OUTBREAK!! Yes, there was polio outbreak so bad that they couldn't have a Boy Scout jamboree. The covers of comic books would be dedicated to curing polio. And guess what? It basically WAS cured! With a vaccine! It's maddening that there are people who seem to want to go back to that era.

ANYhow, off of that particular soapbox to answer Diane's question.

The issue (written by Bill Woolfolk and drawn by Curt Swan and John Fischetti) is famous for Superboy asking to join the Smallville Boy Scout troop...

However, after saving the life of the son of a wealthy man with a large swatch of land that the Boy Scouts want to use for their outings, the man agrees to let the Scouts use it if Superboy takes his son under his wing and helps him join the Boy Scouts. Superboy agrees...

The kid, though, is so wrapped up with this popular kid at school that he basically worships and the guy thinks being a Scout is lame. So Superboy has to come up with a plan to convince the kid, Alvin, to join the Scouts. He does so by changing into his Clark Kent identity and feigning haplessness so that Alvin helps him and then joins with him, giving Alvin a friend at his own level...

So yes, Clark Kent did, in fact, join the Boy Scouts (this was actually partially in that previous column).

He then fakes an injury when he sees that Alvin's bully, Walt, plans on tormenting Alvin while Alvin is out with the Scouts...

Superboy then foils all of Walt's pranks and eventually, Alvin saves Walt and Walt decides to become a Scout, as well, and they're all buddies, including Clark Kent...

So there ya go, Diane, Clark Kent WAS a member of the Boy Scouts!
