Warner Bros. has cancelled the New York premiere for its Superman: Red Son animated movie.

According to an official statement, the studio hopes to protect "the health and welfare of its employees, talent and fans" from the looming threat of the coronavirus by cancelling the event and thereby minimizing "the risk of exposure." The event was originally scheduled to take in New York City on March 16.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and we look forward to seeing you at future events," the statement concluded.

The coronavirus has forced a number of other conventions and events to reschedule or cancel, including the Game Developers Conference, which was due to take place in March as well. New Japan Pro-Wrestling also has had to cancel several shows and Disney has temporarily shut down operations at a few of its parks to combat the further risk of the virus spreading. Hollywood has also been impacted, with several movie productions being suspended, as well as China's No Time to Die premiere being cancelled.

Based on the 2003 comic book storyline of the same name by Mark Millar, Dave Johnson and Killian Plunkett, the animated Superman: Red Son film showcases a much different incarnation of the DC Universe, with the Soviet Union receiving its own Batman while Lex Luthor rises to power in the United States in direct opposition to Superman and the Warsaw Pact.

Directed by Sam Liu, Superman: Red Son stars Jason Isaacs as Kal-El, Amy Acker as Lois Lane, Diedrich Bader as Lex Luthor, Phil Morris as James Olsen, Phil LaMarr as John Stewart, Vanessa Marshall as Wonder Woman, Sasha Roiz as Hal Jordan, Roger Craig Smith as Batman, Paul Williams as Brainiac and William Salyers as Joseph Stalin. The film is now available on digital HD, while the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD versions release on April 17.
