The Last Son of Krypton will have to face his biggest battle yet as he deals with a looming crisis event in a new three-issue Superman: Space Age prestige series from Mark Russell and Mike Allred.

DC announced that Superman: Space Age will see the titular god-like superhero struggle to prevent the end of the world -- the infamous "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event. The synopsis for the new series reads, "After years of standing idle, the young man from Krypton defies the wishes of his fathers to come to the world as the first superhero of the Space Age. As each decade passes and each new danger emerges, he wonders if this is the one that will kill him and everyone he loves. Superman realizes that even good intentions are not without their backlash as the world around him transforms into a place as determined to destroy itself as he is to save it."

"This is a dream project for me," Mark Russell said of the announcement. "Not only because I get to work with a genius like Mike Allred, but because I've always found Superman such a philosophically fascinating character, one which forces us to ask how different would the world be if we chose to be our best selves?"

"SUPER pumped to finally reveal what we've been working on in secret for so long," Allred added. "Easily my biggest project for DC yet. Working with Mark Russell and his brilliant script has been a blast! Packed with head-spinning iconography, top-tier characters, twists, thrills, and chills, resulting in a powerful instant classic epic! It's been simultaneously intimidating and inspiring to meet the challenge of illustrating this phenomenal project!"

DC further teased that Superman: Space Age will give fans a "journey through U.S. history and culture starring our beloved characters." Superman: Space Age marks the first time that Russell and Allred have worked together on a project for the first time. Russell is known for his work on One-Star SquadronThe Flinstones, Wonder Twins and more. Allred's past work includes Silver Surfer, Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams and others.

Crisis on Infinite Earths was a 12-issue 1985 crossover from Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, which also featured multiple tie-ins from other series. The storyline follows a multiversal catastrophe that results in the destruction of countless parallel universes. The ending resulted in a reboot of the DC Universe under the pre-Crisis and post-Crisis eras.

Superman: Space Age #1 -- which comes from Russell and Allred, with variant covers by Allred, Steve Rude and Nick Derington -- releases on July 26 from DC Comics.
