In the issue, Superman remains powerless on Warworld but is still fighting to free the planet's inhabitants from Mongul's cruel reign. After saving Kryl-Ux's life when fighting the monstrous Byla, Superman encounters the Fire of Olgrun, who appears to him in the form of a human child. The two banter for a while before they cross paths with a god-like figure who calls himself the "shade" of Olgrun. Superman and the figure battle one another, as the figure doesn't think Superman is worthy of being an heir of Olgrun.

The figure makes a move to destroy the Fire of Olgrun, causing Superman to intervene and save the child's life. The child then reveals it can control the figure and this was a test to see whether or not Superman truly is worthy of the fire. Having passed with flying colors, the child declares the Man of Steel a "worthy soulbearer of Olgrun." Transforming itself into a small sword for Superman to wield, the child tells Superman, "His fire is yours now. Take it into your flesh, and you will be stronger than ever you were. A GOD in form and purpose. But guard it against those who would take it from you...And against the madness that took its master."
