Just because bullets don’t hurt him doesn’t mean Superman can't use a little help now and again. Despite being one of Earth’s strongest heroes, there are threats out there that are beyond even the Last Son of Krypton’s ability to handle. Fortunately for him, there’s someone in his corner more than willing to lend a helping hand: Krypton’s last daughter, Supergirl.

While many versions of the Girl of Steel exist—including a few that have neither been Kryptonian nor Superman’s cousin—they are all powerful and formidable heroes who have helped the Man of Steel on a number of occasions.

10 Overcoming The Effects Of A Cowardice Ray

Supergirl helps Clark Kent overcome the effects of a cowardice ray in Action Comics #332

In Action Comics #322 by Jerry Siegel and Al Plastino, aliens Garz and Trok of the Superman Revenge Squad tried turning Superman into a coward with their Cowardice Projector ray. Yet the weapon malfunctioned, making Superman only super-afraid while dressed as Clark Kent. With some clever thinking, Supergirl cured her cousin by tricking him into rescuing a falling dirigible as Clark Kent when he thought he was doing so as Superman, thus nullifying the ray’s effects.

They then made Garz and Trok believe the Cowardice Projector’s effects had extended to Kal-El’s Superman identity, allowing Kal-El to surprise them and throw them into a distant galaxy.

9 Fighting Blackstar… While Using The Same Body

Superman and Supergirl look at message in Action Comics #850

The post-Crisis Kara Zor-El could sometimes find her cousin a little… bossy. In Action Comics #850 by Kurt Busiek, Fabian Nicieza, Geoff Johns and Renato Guedes, however, Kara got to understand Kal-El better in the far future, thanks to Brainiac 5’s time-viewing device.

After seeing several milestones from Kal’s life, Supergirl then witnessed herself and Superman being overwhelmed by Blackstar. Luckily, Brainiac sent Kara’s mind back in time to help… only Kara ended up in Superman’s body, rather than her own. Kara managed to stop Blackstar and leave a heartwarming message for her cousin before her mind returned to the 31st century.

8 Fighting Bizarro While Infected With A Kryptonite Virus

Cir-El protects Superman from Bizarro in Superman #198

Though her time as Supergirl was short, Cir-El had plenty of opportunities to give her genetic “father,” Superman, a hand. When Kal-El contracted the Kryptonian virus Xarxas, for instance, he and Cir-El learned that Bizarro had also been infected. However, while the virus was weakening Superman, it was actually making Bizarro both stronger and more intelligent.

Superman asked Supergirl for help, but Cir-El’s confidence had been shaken when the Fortress of Solitude’s sensors suggested she wasn’t Superman’s actually daughter. Nevertheless, Kal convinced her she was the hope he needed, and when Bizarro’s power started waning, Cir-El delivered the finishing blow.

7 Escaping From Phantom Zone Criminals And A Nuclear Missile

Supergirl rescuing Superman from the Phantom Zone with Batman's equipment in Convergence: Adventures of Superman #2

Many characters from DC’s past lived on in Convergence, including the Supergirl and Superman of Earth-One. With Lucius Fox’s help, the Cousins of Steel entered the Phantom Zone, hoping to exit the realm somewhere outside pre-Crisis Gotham City, which they and Lucius were trapped in. The Zone’s Kryptonian prisoners quickly noticed Superman and Supergirl’s arrival, however, and attacked.

While Supergirl fared well, the criminals had a particular bloodlust for Superman, as Kal-El’s father, Jor-El, had been their jailer. Supergirl came to Kal’s rescue repeatedly, including yanking him out of the Phantom Zone; later, she also saved Superman when General Symian strapped to a nuclear warhead.

6 Fighting Rogol Zaar

Superman and Supergirl fight Rogol Zaar in Man of Steel (2018) #6

The 2018 Man of Steel miniseries revealed that Krypton was destroyed by a being called Rogol Zaar, rather than a series of natural disasters. Dedicated to killing all Kryptonians, Zaar headed to Earth upon learning of the existence of Superman. There Zaar reignited his Kryptonian killing spree by destroying the Bottle City of Kandor. Superman traced Zaar to Metropolis, but was quickly overwhelmed by Zaar’s energy attacks.

Luckily, Supergirl came to his rescue, fighting Rogol alone and together with her cousin. Kara later rescued Kal-El during two of his rematches with Zaar, then banished the villain into the Phantom Zone.

5 Fighting The Cyborg Superman And Mongul When Superman Was Powerless

Superman about to introduce Steel to an invisible Supergirl in Action Comics #691

When Superman returned to life after being killed by Doomsday, he had lost a great deal of power. Consequently, he found himself having to rely on weapons and technology when he raided Engine City with Steel and Superboy to defeat the Cyborg Superman and Mongul. Yet he also had a hidden ally: Matrix, a.k.a. the first post-Crisis Supergirl, who had approached Superman before his trip to Engine City to offer a hand.

With her invisibility, Supergirl protected Superman from harm and helped fend off Mongul’s forces. Unfortunately, Supergirl’s invisibility was made obsolete when Mongul drenched her in machine oil from a nearby pipe.

4 Impersonating Clark Kent To Explain How He Survived Doomsday

Supergirl (Matrix) impersonating Clark Kent in Action Comics #692

It didn’t take long for the whole planet to learn about Superman’s resurrection. Bringing back Clark Kent, however, was a trickier matter, as the mild-mannered reporter’s prolonged disappearance was never explained to the world at large. Enter Matrix/Supergirl, who helped Superman devise a cover story by assuming Clark’s form, even hiding in the rubble of a civil defense shelter filled with food and water to make Kent’s survival seem convincing.

“Clark” also made sure to get a picture alongside Superman and Lois, just in case anyone found the timing of Clark’s return too coincidental.

3 Defeating The Real Brainiac And Saving The Sun

Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) stopping Brainiac's Solar-Aggressor from destroying Earth's sun.

Not long after the post-Crisis Kara Zor-El debuted, the Girl of Steel hit Superman with a shocking revelation: he had never fought the actual Brainiac. All the versions Clark had fought previously were the original Brainiac’s probes, sent to scour planets for cities their creator could add to his collection. Superman tracked Brainiac to a distant planet, and the two engaged in battle aboard Brainiac’s ship.

Meanwhile, Supergirl was abducted from Earth by Brainiac’s androids and taken to his ship, but was freed by her cousin. Supergirl then stopped Brainiac’s Solar-Aggressor missile from destroying Earth’s sun, while Superman and Brainiac took their fight to Earth.

2 Stopping The Forces Of Earth And New Krypton From Completely Killing Each Other

Supergirl and Superman in War of the Supermen

Learning that Kandor lived initially filled Superman and Supergirl with hope. Yet their expectations became strained by the machinations of General Dru-Zod II and Kara’s mother Alura In-Ze, as well as the xenophobic schemes of Lex Luthor and General Sam Lane.

Tensions between Earthlings and Kandorians peaked when Zod declared war on Earth… right before Alura’s captive Reactron exploded, rigged by Luthor to destroy the Kandorians’ artificial planet, New Krypton. Superman found Supergirl alive among the planet’s debris, and the two took on General Zod’s and General Lane’s forces singlehandedly before other Earth heroes joined them. They stopped the war, but the casualties were enormous.

1 Stopping The Anti-Monitor

Crisis on Infinite Earths may feature the most famous instance of Supergirl saving Superman’s life ever. While exploring the Anti-Monitor’s fortress, Superman and the second Doctor Light discovered a machine forcing the multiverse’s five remaining Earths to merge and destroy each other. Just then, however, the Anti-Monitor attacked Superman.

Hearing her cousin’s pained scream, Supergirl (the pre-Crisis Kara Zor-El) raced to find him, heavily damaging the Anti-Monitor’s body and slamming him into his machine, destroying the device. The two kept fighting until the Anti-Monitor blasted Supergirl while she was distracted and escaped; Kara then died in her cousin’s arms.
