Superman: The Mystery of DC Comics Presents #5

Comic Book Questions Answered – where I answer whatever questions you folks might have about comic books (feel free to e-mail questions to me at brianc@cbr.com).

Reader Greg R. wrote in to ask, " I have had this question for years and decided today I make an effort to resolve it. Why is Ross Andru listed in DC Comics Presents # 5 as the editor instead of Mr. Schwartz? No other Schwartz edited book that month had any one else credited but Mr. Schwartz. Years ago I was privileged to meet and have a little time with Mr. Schwartz and when this was asked of him, he didn't remember. Any ideas?"

As Greg correctly notes, DC Comics Presents launched with Julius Schwartz (the then-editor of the Superman titles) as the editor...

Schwartz was on the book as of issue #4...

But then, for issue #5...

Ross Andru was the editor...

But Schwartz was back the next issue...

And Schwartz remained on the book for the rest of its nearly 100-issue long run...

So what's the deal?

Andru WAS the editor on Aquaman's feature in Adventure Comics soon after DC Comics Presents #5...

Could that have played a role?

I asked Mark Waid if he had any ideas and he did not, but he was luckily talking with the great comic book historian, John Wells, so Mark asked John and John had the answer right away! It turns out that Andru was announced as the new editor on DC Comics Presents with #5, but then the DC Implosion hit (where DC canceled a whole lot of titles) and everyone's assignments were shuffled around, and so Schwartz took back DC Comics Presents after just a single Andru-edited issue.

So there ya go, Greg!

Thanks to Mark and John for the answer! And thanks to Bob Rozakis, who I am sure WOULD have answered this had John not answered it before I got a chance to get an answer from Bob!
