While the Kent family may have shaped Superman's strong moral compass, the Man of Steel gets his more extraordinary abilities from his Kryptonian makeup. It also appears that one of his most iconic (and underrated) abilities was inherited from his Kryptonian parents, as seen in Superman Vs. Lobo #2 (by Tim Seeley, Sarah Beattie and Mirka Andolfo). Similar to the Last Kryptonian's secret identity as Clark Kent, Superman's mother proved that she too could hide in plain sight.

Although Superman’s dual identity has recently been restored, it’s worth noting that he temporarily abandoned it back in 2019. This came about when his father Jor-El failed to live up to the Man of Steel’s expectations after the pair finally met, causing Earth's greatest hero to question his identity. This made the Last Kryptonian's perspective on his mother’s secret identity all the more impactful.

Superman's Mother is a Master of Disguise

Superman's mother Lara Lor-Van revealed to have been Jan-S

During Superman Vs. Lobo #2, a character named Jan-S went undercover to prevent a Kryptonian faction from unleashing a dangerous army of Lobo clones into the cosmos. Superman soon made the shocking discovery that Jan-S was in actuality his mother, Lara Lor-Van. This was notable because of how she went undercover. Despite being married to one of Krypton’s most prolific scientists, Lara was able to effectively go unrecognized while disguised as Jan-S simply by changing her outfit and behavior.

Of course, this bears remarkable similarities to how Superman manages his own secret identity. Although Lois Lane and many others at the Daily Planet saw Clark Kent on a regular basis, they failed to see past his very simple disguise. Like his mother before him, the Man of Steel was able to keep his secret due to a simple change in outfit and behavior. Superman's mother may be even better at blending in than her son, as she managed to deceive both General Zod and Lobo.

Superman's Ideological Clash with his Parents Over Secret Identities

Lara Lor-Van converses with Lobo while in her disguise

By masquerading as Jan-S, Lara was able to destroy the Lobo clones before they were sucessfully unleashed. While Jor-El and Lara were pleased with the success of their mission, Superman was outraged, wanting to save these sentient beings. Having Superman's encounter with his birth parents end like this foreshadowed the later troubles he would have with his father.

Superman may have disapproved of his parents’ methods but he behaves in a very similar manner while using the identity of Clark Kent. This may have contributed to him abandoning his secret identity for a period of time. Either way, it adds a whole new dimension to his decision, with Superman actively trying to improve upon the actions of his parents.
