Superman & Lois will feature its eponymous couple dealing with several threats over the course of Season 1, and a new one of those threats has been revealed.

Showrunner Todd Helbing told EW that Season 1 will feature the debut of the mad scientist Thaddeus Killgrave. In DC canon, Killgrave is a rogue scientist who builds and sells weaponry designed to combat the Man of Steel. He has also worked with the criminal organization Intergang, which frequently fights Superman using alien technology.

"Sometimes the Superman story is a true Superman story, and it's just him being kickass and influences the story in a way that you might not expect, which is episode 3. Sometimes it's a new villain, but it speaks to the larger picture of the season. Sometimes it has to do with the mythology of the season," Helbing told the publication while discussing how he and the writing team approached episodes and villains. "We didn't want to do freak-of-the-week [like Smallville], we didn't necessarily want to do one villain, and we didn't necessarily want to do what [The Flash showrunner] Eric Wallace is doing, where he has a graphic novel approach. We kind of wanted to do our own thing, but the true north was really: How is the family reacting to what is going on around them? And what's the true meaning of that?"

Superman & Lois will also feature a pair of recurring villains in the form of Wolé Parks' mysterious Stranger and Adam Rayner's Morgan Edge, who Clark and Lois will face respectively. Helbing said this was to give Clark Kent and Lois Lane a respective enemy for Season 1 that matched their respective skills.

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series premieres Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
