Expect both Kent parents to be dealing with their own personalized threats when Superman & Lois returns.

"In a really good way, the Superman issue he has is driving the issues he has as a dad," showrunner Todd Helbing told SFX Magazine. "This is a particular villain, that the more I talk about the more people are going to figure out who it is. But Superman is dealing with an enemy that is going to be a massive headache for him."

Though Helbing never disclosed the new villain's name, he confirmed that Clark Kent's story will intertwine with the reveal of another foe posing conflict for his wife. "We start out with one villain that is really more Superman, while setting up the Lois villain. They are not working together, but they hand off in a cool way this season," he continued. "One of them comes to the forefront and, in a lot of ways, is more powerful than the other one. It will take the whole team, in a different way than last year, to stop this person."

Introducing separate bad guys for Superman & Lois' leads contrasts with how Season 1 handled its villain, gradually revealing that Daily Planet owner Morgan Edge, whose corruption Lois regularly tried to expose, was a secret Kryptonian named Tal-Rho with ties to Superman's family. Similarly, the show's pilot introduced a masked antagonist intent on destroying Superman, only to reveal himself as an alternate version of John Henry Irons -- known in the comics as Steel -- from a dimension where Superman turned evil and murdered Irons' wife: Lois Lane. Despite his initial murder attempts, Irons gradually accepted that this Superman isn't the same as the one from his universe and aided Clark in stopping Edge's plan to turn humans into Kryptonian soldiers.

So far, the biggest antagonist featured in Superman & Lois' trailers is Lt. Anderson, a military officer who deems Superman a "liability" in debriefs and clashes with him over whether the hero's loyalties should be with his country or the planet. Season 2 will also focus on Lois coping with the arrival of Irons' daughter Natalie, who mistook Lois for her dimensional mother in the Season 1 finale. Though David Ramsey did cameo in the show's 12th episode as Arrow's John Diggle, it's currently unclear if any characters from Supergirl or other Arrowverse series -- beyond a returning Jenna Dewan -- will make Superman & Lois appearances this season.

Superman & Lois Season 2 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
