WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 2, "The Ties That Bind," which aired Tuesday, Jan. 18 on The CW.

Zack Snyder's vision for the DC Extended Universe remains one of the most divisive topics in cinema. After his Justice League cut, some fans wanted him back despite Warner Bros. pulling the plug on his movies for being too dour and violent. Interestingly, with Superman & Lois pulling elements from Man of Steel, but shaping them with more heart and soul, Season 2 just resurrected Krypton's controversial arc regarding childbirth.

In Man of Steel, Kryptonians weren't born, they were bred in cells as part of the Genesis Chamber. It meant they were predestined to certain fates, building out a caste society which people couldn't break out from. It kept the poor and rich apart, with no room for evolution, which is what the guilds felt brought order.

However, Kal-El was the first kid to be born naturally, ergo why his parents sent him away before the planet got destroyed as they thought he was meant for more. It led to Zod's mission to take over Earth and breed new Kryptonians there, only for Kal-El to murder the warlord to protect his new home. Some didn't take to this, though, as they felt this method of birth made Jor-El's home much more cold and bitter than the sense of family they saw in the Christopher Reeve era.

This has come to light again in the second episode of Superman & Lois Season 2, revealed when Tal-Rho was taken to his cave fortress to try to help Kal figure out his visions and why his powers were on the fritz. Tal summoned Lara, their mom, and as he waxed on about how his own dad, Zeta, made him a monster, she confessed that Tal wasn't born naturally -- he was bred in a cell, just as Snyder had laid down. It's why Zeta saw him as an instrument to conquer and destroy, and why even though he had Lara's DNA, Tal wasn't altruistic like Kal.

It's an enticing prospect in terms of narrative, because after Kal beat him down and took him back to prison, Tal was left considering breaking the path his dad laid out for him. He had embarked on a mission similar to Zod, wanting to erase humanity and put Kryptonian souls in their bodies -- but now, the door is open to redemption.

Tal-Rho's understood how robotic and programmed he was, and how Zeta abused the birthing cells. Thus, unlike Zod, who was blinded with no one to guide him, Tal bucked what happened in Man of Steel as he actually has two family members to help him choose a new destiny. Thus, it added more nuance than what transpired in the DCEU, setting the stage for at least the House of El to thrive again.

Superman & Lois airs Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW.
