WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 8, "Holding the Wrench," which aired Tuesday on The CW.

In last week's episode of Superman & Lois, The CW series threw thins for a loop when it revealed that Captain Luthor, aka the Stranger, was actually John Henry Irons (Wolé Parks). After a confrontation with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), Irons was incarcerated by the Department of Defense, waiting to be interrogated -- and Superman was ready to be the first to ask him questions. Now, as "Holding the Wrench" begins, the Man of Steel meets with Irons in a darkly lit interrogation room and quickly concludes that he comes from a parallel Earth.

A brief flashback reveals how Irons traveled from one universe to the other using some sort of portal. Back at the interrogation, he comes clean about pretty much everything: how his Superman turned evil and joined other Kryptonians in destroying the Earth, how he fought alongside a parallel version of Sam Lane and even how he was married to his world's Lois Lane.

These revelations come out just Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) search through Irons' RV, looking for any sort of clues about who he really is and what he is after. They quickly find a dashboard that is packed with files about his life back on his Earth, including pictures of John and Lois' daughter, Natalie. This discovery clearly affects Lois, but the reason why isn't revealed until later in the episode.

After making Jonathan swear not to continue the search without her, the curious teenager later heads back into the RV, alone, to better help his mother cope with the staggering weight of their recent discovery. Unfortunately, while he's there, Jonathan accidentally triggers the RV's defense system, which locks down the vehicle and starts a countdown that will kill the intruder. Lois rushes to the RV, but when she's unable to get inside, she calls Superman.

The superhero arrives a second later, rushing inside the RV and protecting his son from a hail of bullets. Back inside the house, Lois scolds Jonathan like never before. In a manner that is rare for the character, she completely loses her usually calm demeanor and motherly warmth, and she snaps at Jonathan with rage-filled tears about the carelessness of his actions. This rare outburst from his mother causes Jonathan to well up in tears, and it isn't long before she orders him to get out of her face.

Clark, noticing the uncharacteristic display of anger coming from Lois, suggests that she goes talk to her old psychiatrist, who is still active back at the DoD base. Remembering how much she helped her in the past, Lois agrees. Once she meets with the doctor, Lois expresses her absolute regret in snapping at Jonathan like that, and she breaks down in tears. As she continues to talk with the psychiatrist, it becomes clear why she's so emotional: when Jordan and Jonathan were very young, Lois became pregnant with a girl she and Clark planned on naming Natalie, after Sam Lane's mother. Sadly, she suffered a miscarriage, and the baby was lost.

When she saw that an alternate version of herself had a daughter named Natalie and then Jonathan nearly died, Lois comes to the realization that she never properly processed the loss of her daughter. Back at home, she tells Jonathan all about her miscarriage, and the sadness she still feels over it. Showing great signs of maturity, Jonathan understands, and mother and son forgive each other and hug in a tearful embrace.

Elsewhere, Sarah Cushing (Inde Navarrette) decides to audition for the school musical, and her father, Kyle, is all set to help her practice and overcome her stage fright. However, once the time comes for him to show up at the audition, he isn't there. In truth, when visiting his wife Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) at work, Kyle learns that he could have had a spot in Morgan Edge's leadership program. When he confronts Lana about it, she tells him that Edge doesn't believe Kyle is leadership material. This is, of course, a lie because Lana didn't nominate Kyle for the program to protect him from Edge. Lana lies to further protect Kyle from Edge, but it clearly wounds his ego -- so much so, he doesn't show up to Sarah's audition for the musical.

Thankfully, Sarah doesn't have to perform alone: Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin) steps up to help her by playing the piano, and Sarah delivers a brilliant performance that is sure to get her a spot in the musical. Back at the DoD, Sam Lane and his soldiers attempt to get as much information as they can out of Irons. However, the entire situation turns south when one of his soldiers is revealed to be one of Edge's agents. The soldier has Kryptonian superpowers, and he attempts to break Irons out to deliver him to his boss.

While they are still in the building, Superman finds the soldier inside the Project 7734 room, which is filled with experimental Kryptonite-based weapons. The soldier uses these weapons to weaken Superman, but the Man of Steel still defeats his opponent. However, weakened by the Kryptonite, Superman falls to the floor. Irons stands over him, ready to finally take him out, but he's interrupted by Same Lane and his soldiers, as well as Lois, who convinces him that this Superman is different from the one he knew back on his Earth.

In a surprising show of restraint, Irons backs off, and Superman is given the time to recover. In talking with Lane, Clark realizes that the super-powered enforcers under Edge's employ may not be just random people granted special abilities -- they might actually be hosts for reincarnated people from Krypton. And if that's the case, Edge is building an army of actual Kryptonians.

The prospect of this coming war leads to a change in the relationship between Superman and Irons. After the fight, Irons is freed, and he is reunited with his RV. Superman recognizes that he may need his help if a war really is coming, and while Irons isn't ready to fight by Superman's side, he understands that he may be an ally. As the episode comes to a close, Irons drives away to explore the world, with a brighter outlook on life.

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series returns May 18 and will air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
