The following article contains spoilers from Superman #3, on sale now from DC Comics.
Dawn of DC has done a remarkable job of shining the spotlight on most of the Super-Family's members, even their most obscure ones. However, one major character that hasn't gotten as much attention as of late is Lois Lane. Sure, she has been made chief editor of the Daily Planet, but beyond that she hasn't really gotten a story focused on her, until now.
Superman #3 (by Joshua Williamson, Jamal Campbell, and VC's Ariana Maher) ended with Lois Lane promising her husband that she would begin investigating Metropolis' new hero: Marilyn Moonlight. Given that the character is heavily implied to have ties to Metropolis' earliest days, then this puts Lois not only on a collision course with Marilyn. But it also makes her the perfect person to tell the story of Metropolis' beginnings.
Lois Lane is Suspicious About Metropolis' New Hero
Lois had been taken out of commission by the infestation of parasites that nearly consumed Metropolis. In the aftermath of that attack, she decided to take a more active role in her husband's superheroic activities. He has been busy working with Lex Luthor and contending with the mysterious new foes that are attacking the city from the shadows, but it was Clark's mentioning of Marilyn Moonlight that caught Lois' attention. Metropolis has its heroes, but most of them were inspired by Superman. Here though, is a character who claims to predate the Man of Steel entirely.
This would naturally have grabbed Lois' attention. A chance to do research into a place she loves and have an adventure while doing it is just the sort of action Lois Lane lives for. It might even put her on the path to having her own encounter with Marilyn Moonlight. While she didn't seem like an overtly aggressive figure, a team up between the two could result in more context being given about the mysterious heroine.
Lois' Quest for the Truth Is Her Dawn of DC Story
More importantly though, it gives Lois something to do. She has been playing a remarkably background role to her powered family members for the last few months. From letting her son go into the multiverse to fight Ultraman, to being infected by Parasite, even to simply watching as her family fights off Metallo. Lois was there for all of it, but never really played a major role in the events. The question of Marilyn Moonlight might be Lois' chance to take a more active role.
Each character in her family has been given their own little niche within the DCU, but Lois was waiting for her next adventure, and this is it. An investigation into the past of Metropolis, and how it is tethered to Marilyn Moonlight. However, if she is investigating the return of a past hero, then Lois needs to consider that it might not be the "who" that matters so much as the "why" of it all. Marilyn Moonlight seems to be as much a figure of legend as an actual person, and legends only come out of retirement because something big is coming.
