Created by Bill Finger and John Sikela, Lana Lang first appeared in 1950's Superboy #10 and has traditionally served as Clark Kent/Superman's first girlfriend while growing up in Smallville. That's once again the case in Superman & Lois, which follows Clark and Lois Lane as they move their sons Jonathan and Jordan back to Clark's hometown, in the wake of his mother's death. There, Clark rekindles his friendship with Lana, who now works as a loan officer at Smallvile Bank, in addition to serving as the cheerleading coach at the town's high school.

Shortly after their arrival, the Kent sons strike up a (in Jordan's case, semi-romantic) relationship with Sarah, who's around the same age as them. At the same time, Lois clashes with Kyle, Smallville's fire chief, over his support for Morgan Edge, a business mogul who's been mysteriously buying up property and real estate around the town. This also leads to tension with the Lang Cushing household, with Lana and Kyle's marriage having already hit a rough patch due to Lana losing faith in herself and Kyle turning to alcohol to deal with the stress of his job.

Having to watch her family dynamic disintegrate before her eyes has already taken its toll on Sarah's mental health, leading her to attempt to commit suicide a year before Superman & Lois picks up. In an interview with CBR, Inde Navarrette explained that one of her main goals while playing the character is to prevent her from being defined by this one moment from her personal history. "So, particularly with Sarah, unless it's brought up in an interview, I will never use the word 'suicide' or 'killing herself,' because I feel like that doesn't do her justice," Navarrette said. "So I feel like that really describes what that scenario was."

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series returns May 18 and will air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
