WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 8, "Holding the Wrench," which aired Tuesday on The CW.

Superman & Lois hasn't just been about the Kents; it also focused on Lana Cushing and her family's problems in Smallville. Her daughter, Sarah, has become a key player in keeping Jordan Kent composed while he discovers more about his Kryptonian powers, but a lot rests on Lana's shoulders now that Morgan Edge has made her a key part of his business empire in Kansas. It gets darker in the latest episode, as Lana doesn't realize she's his secret weapon in building his deadly army.

Lana is taken back when Edge gave her a promotion, as he wants to help rebuild Smallville. Despite Lois' concerns, Lana is optimistic, putting doubt aside because many families need money and jobs, such as her old friend, Emily. Little does she know that her recruitment for this executive team is all so Edge can have test subjects to make Kryptonian super-soldiers.

Lois, thanks to her investigations with the Stranger, finds intel that suggests Edge is transplanting alien minds into human bodies. She ran into this in the past with Derek Powell, who had powers like Kal-El, as well as other assassins including Edge's assistant, Larr.

Superman's also attacked by one of these soldiers at a military base, and Lois ties this back to the unique machine from a few episodes ago. Audiences may have originally thought it was just giving people abilities, but as Derek said, he wasn't feeling like himself, so Lois makes this theory with her new findings of the X-Kryptonite in the town's mines.

It gets twisted in the final moments when Larr takes over the team Lana hired, making it clear they're in for a life-changing experience. Edge already spoke to her about the special project, more or less confirming they're going to be guinea pigs.

He was eager to bring Emily in as he knows it'll be emotional if Lana ever rebels, and Larr takes it a step further by suggesting to Kyle (Lana's husband) that he should enlist too. He thinks it's to be in a policy-making role, but again Larr wants to ensure she can keep Lana in check and impress her boss.

They will be powerful tools to use against Superman because Clark knows most of these people, paving the way for a chilling test. It might even lead to the Man of Steel revealing the truth about his secret to Lana, as she'll have to now help him and Lois save all these people from being sacrificial lambs in Edge's sadistic vision.

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Dylan Walsh, Alex Garfin, Jordan Elsass, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Inde Navarrette and Wolé Parks. The series returns May 18 and will air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
