WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 13, "Fail Safe," which aired Tuesday on The CW.

In Superman & Lois, Kal-El wrestled with the revelation that a version of himself razed and enslaved Earth. It's where John Henry Irons came from, informing why Sam Lane and the military have Section 7734 filled with kryptonite weapons in case their Man of Steel broke bad. While it looked like the army realized Superman would always be an ally, Clark decides to give the arsenal to someone responsible because of a surprising bloodlust he discovered he has.

The revelation comes when Sam tells Superman they're going to keep a few items, but they'll be getting rid of the major weapons. Part of Clark is glad, as it builds their trust up after Kal saved them from Tal-Rho's army. However, a part of him is worried after speaking to his imprisoned brother, who makes it clear he saw Kal enjoying God-like power.

As such, Superman orders the arsenal to be given to someone who's objective and who wouldn't misappropriate it -- John. The soldier's stunned because he just wants to try to find alternate versions of his family and build a life on this world, but Clark believes he should hold the key in case the hero snaps.

John accepts the plan to run Section 7734 since he knows the damage Superman could do, but Lois doesn't take the news well. She berates Clark in the show's first major domestic dispute between them, but he confesses while Zod possessed his body, his mind could feel what was going on, and sadly, he enjoyed it. Luckily, John snapped Superman out of the possession, but Clark is wary that he may lose control and be weaponized again. The possibility is small, but it's still a risk, and thus, he needs someone to save Earth and his family.

It's a big move, one that could push John further to change his armor and suit up as Steel, and in time, Lois eventually gives in to this uneasy deal. She's still mad because she has faith in Clark, but he is just being cautious in case a threat like Tal comes up again. As painful as it is, it makes sense, which is why Sam agrees.

Ultimately, they need someone to watch the Kryptonian after seeing how much damage he and Tal could have inflicted. As Superman & Lois continues to air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, more threats, big and small, are bound to appear.
